What's the point of foster care? How does the system work? How do you become a foster parent? What is the foster child's relationship with the bio family? Foster care is around because some parents aren't ready for kids or can't take care of them properly. And all kids deserve to have a family that can provide for them and love them. So the point of foster care is to give every kid a chance to be in a good home, and to be loved. Basically if the parents are arrested or they can't take care of their children or even if they give up their kids, the kids go into the foster care system. Where they will get a worker and the worker will try and find a home best fit for those kids/kid. Once there they have a few visits and then usually they move in and if things go really well they might even get adopted! On the other hand though, if things go south the parents do have the option to give up that child back into the system. Then the process starts again. To become a foster parent you have to take classes for about 6-9 months. It also very important that both you and your spouse to attend. For the simple reason that you guys need to learn how to work as a team. Plus if both of you attend then both of you have that knowledge. Have more questions? If the parents don't feel as though they need to know their bio family then that family can cut off all connection. When a child becomes adopted the parents become their legal guardians and can choose anything for that child. From a personal point of view; my mother allowed me to have contact with my bio family and it changed my world completely. I felt like some of me came back, but at the same time it was different for me. I started to realize that I was really grateful to have the family I do today. That doesn't mean I don't love my bio family but the fact that my mom allowed me to do this because she wanted me to be happy made me so grateful. I hope you learned something from these facts!
